The World’s Longest Painting on Continuous Canvas Philippines
+ Sunday, August 13, 2006 +
We first got the news a couple of week’s back, off our professor ma’am Mailah Baldemor, who was our thesis adviser. She always would tell about these kinds of events, to expose us to sharpen and enhance our talents. Within a couple of weeks later ma’am Joy Embolsado, one of the organizers of the longest painting arrived at UST and went straight to CFAD. Ma’am Mailah contacted me at once, telling me that I should come and make arrangements with her. I was with them a few minutes later. They talked with the Painting Department Head, Mrs. Glory Crumb-Rogers, and well, I was asked to show ma’am Joy and her friend where the Main Building in UST is so that they can give our posters of the event, after which I obliged.
We went and while walking to the Main Building, I introduced our organization, the
The 31st came, and heck, only EiYa and I where from the Painting 4-1 section, which really made some of the organizers angry. But alas, it worked out in the end; they just gave the reserved slots to someone else. Along who came there, where our professors, ma’am Mailah Baldemor-Balde, Sir. Danilo Santiago and ma’am Laforteza. There were also alumni students of UST CFAD Painting, that ma’am Mailah invited. One was Marvic. After the registration and after enough chit chat, we started painting.

At first, we though there was going to be food in the 1,000.00 we gave, but it was just a misunderstanding, leaving EiYa and I hungry while painting, having not eaten lunch, and having no real breaks when painting.
Before
We now sketched our works, EiYa was inspired by the Japanese art of the Koi, and her approach was the same as the Japanese, she really digs that stuff. Her printed studies really helped her to paint the thing in red and yellow, even though her studies where black and white.
I had in mind while searching for references in the internet about fishes, while after searching in the images section of yahoo; I saw fish faces of people trying to make you laugh but man they suck. Literally I suddenly got this idea, about fishes creating the face of a man, like from that painter, Archibald I think was his name, and the serial killer. vampire blood sucker, Albert Fish. The two ideas were pretty cool when combines, and so I did so, I printed tons of fish references and brought the book The Dracula Syndrome by Richard Monaco and Bill Burt. This is a book about cases and life stories of people who have the dreaded Dracula syndrome, the thirst for human flesh and blood, and I tell you, these cases are true having some of the victims kill so that they could drink the blood and feast at the bodies of their victims. Men, women and children alike were victims, and mostly males are with the syndrome. The case of the Black Dahlia, which is now a movie, entitled The Black Dahlia with Mia Krishner, Scarlett Johansen and Josh Hartnett. Putting everything aside, I chose Albert Fish, because I needed a face and “fish” was is last name so that’s why I picked him
Why fishes you ask? Well there was a theme while painting, and I think it’s “Fishes Under The Sea” or “Fishes of the Ocean” or something, but your painting must be in the theme of fishes for the judges might cut and dissect your piece out of the long painting canvas. the idea I think is, having different kinds of looking fish out there in the sea, and connecting it with every artwork, would mean that the inconsistency of the styles didn’t matter. Many creatures aren’t even discovered yet in the sea, and I even saw people painting mermaids so…
My parents came, and we took more pictures of ourselves with the paintings. I was really satisfied with my work, and also was EiYa, and I am as glad to her work. We ate dinner at the food court separated from my family for they ate sizzling and we ate at a Tokyo Tokyo small branch. Before going home, I went to comic quest and bought CIVIL WAR 3 and Amazing Spider Man # 532, just the right collector’s issue when Spider-Man finally reveals himself that he is Peter Parker to the Public!
I felt really satisfied in finishing that piece, it was exhausting and tiring and I know EiYa felt that too, but I think without her I really couldn’t have finished that first time style on my own. Thanks Eys.

The Gintong SuSi
I painted again, this time I painted 3 meters, and I still wanted to do the composition of many fishes forming one figure. I wasn’t going to try just another portrait anytime soon so I decided to paint it in the shape of a great white shark. And alas! I finished it on time. I was with the new members of Gintong SuSi, mostly 2nd year Painting students, and they brought some other reinforcements that wanted to join in, in the organization, that really make my heart rise, having to know more and more people want to join in the organization.
Among the other people that were there was; Ben Reyna, a really enthusiastic first year advertising students who really wants to paint and has fun doing it, and his skills are really awesome at a young stage. Joms
I started painting at around 12:00pm and I finished the whole shark with the details at around 9:00pm. There was no background, and I intend not to put any, just to leave it white, but the organizers suggested I should paint it, and so, I went back. Well, EiYa and I went back the next day to meet her mom there at SM north, and my Parents too where there, and the organizers told me I should put the background, so on the 26th, I went back again to finish the background, luckily, I did finish, and it turned out alright my mom said even with the blue background.
I had a third try on the 26th + 27th, I painted yet another 3 meters, and another shark composed of many fishes. It’s not that I am a repetitive artist, I just am happy with the super details and the optical illusion and effect it gives. I dunno, I might try it out sometime on canvas. I went with a2? Biohazard and he too participated at the mall. He took a big leap, for it is his first time to do something that big, and with acrylic. He took on two meters and it finished almost 5 hours after he started. Mine was, well, undone. Yup, for the first time my painting was undone, and I had to return again the next day, the last day to paint, and finish my painting. I was going to my friend Daniel’s Art talk at their house at Antipolo, but I had to leave at around 4pm to get there on time to hear the talk. I was out of luck, I hadn’t finished it yet by 4pm, in fact it was only 80% done, and man, like I said, it was the last day. So I better finish it. But I finished the third painting at around 8:00pm and by that time; I really have to abandon the art talk because I wouldn’t get there with much to hear. I had packed everything for that overnight stay at Antipolo, but I had to finish the 3 meter painting. I just texted Daniel that I wouldn’t be able to make it, and he told me later in the week that they’ll be having another one of those talks so I was really lucky I made the right choice.

+ ( no photo of the third painting is available yet) +
My cousins also participated, I invited him through txt to come over and look at the paintings, and at the first day he painted the back ground and on the second he had his brother help him. Sergio and his younger brother Enzo was really into it, they were painting beside a2? Biohazard, and that was really cool. Sergio has no experience / background in painting, except once I told him to try out some of my acrylic paints on a canvas, ‘forgot how that turned out, but anyway, he was painting like a Pro, with some basic teaching from the both of there. A2? Biohazard
By the end of the day, all of us finished our paintings, and I really didn’t expect that painting to be that good. I mean seriously, I don’t ever say my paintings are good, but just this once I really out did myself, I’m so proud of the out come and I really really did it all by myself without any help! Man, I was exhausted in the end, but it was all worth it. Not to brag but, people were actually taking pictures of the shark painting, and yeah of course they took pictures of all the artists painting there, but I was really proud of my work, and get this, people even stayed for as long as they could when I was going to finish the painting, just to see how it would look in the end, same with the official photographer, and they told me that they’ll be putting it in one of the magazines that are coming out, and may Joy told me they’ll be putting it also to be as one of their CD cover. Everything turned out great, and yet I really wished I could repeat and do that kind of work on my own, it’s just really different if I paint it in my own accord, and really the adrenaline pump of me knowing that it’s the last day and I had to rush the painting and with people looking at your every stroke made a big difference. As an artist, you’d exert extra effort, endurance and skill, and I think everyone who painted there, or ever painted for something for some reason not just for their own, has felt that kind of feeling.
I met people, old friends and made new ones, and they are really happy seeing paintings done on the spot that makes them realize how something so simple and easy can still attract people’s interest and curiosity in this high tech world we live in now.
They will exhibit the paintings on February 2007, or they’ll be presenting it for the Guinness guys to make things official for the book, and I hope to go there and see the paintings and take one last look at mine, and take pictures of course.
Thanks everyone at the longest painting team, More Power!
